Sweat it out!
Dogs are pretty good at most things (better than most humans), but when it comes to cooling down it is usually harder for them. They do sweat like us, but on a much smaller scale through their pads and ear canals not really giving them much relief. Dogs will also pant to regulate their temperature.... the harder they pant the hotter they are. Simples! (It probably isn't that simple, but lets not get tied up with fancy scientific words none of us can pronounce!)
A hot day for us is a VERY hot day for our dogs. They are protected from the heat by their coats to some extent, however, it really doesn't take much for them to overheat when exercised or trying to be by your side whilst your tanning it up in the garden! See Stanleys tips to keep your dogs cool during the summer for a much happier and healthier pooch!
How to cool them down - 5 top tips
Move your dog to a cooler shades location
Put their feet in cool water, stand them in a paddling pool, river or just a bucket of cool water
Offer cool fresh water for them to drink
Spray your dog with cool water, then plonk them in the shade with a fan to create some airflow for them - Please avoid using cold water as if it is too cold this can cause the opposite effect and cause the blood vessels to contract on the surface and drive the heat inwards.
Wrap some ice packs in a cloth and place in the groin, armpits and side of the neck
If your dog is worsening and not cooling down, then please get in touch with your vet ASAP as further action may be required, you can check out our signs of heatstroke so you know what to look out for! https://www.stanleysdaycare.com/blog
